KAENA
Kaena was launched in 2001 to showcase Mikael’s deep passion for Grenache. Kaena is a boutique winery that sources from Tierra Alta Vineyard and Larner Vineyard in the Ballard Canyon AVA , primarily. Mikael who is part Hawaiian and raised on the Oahu shores, uses a shortened version of his given name for the brand – Kaena – which means “potential for greatness”.

2014 Hapa Blanc
Barrel aged in neutral French oak for 8 months prior to bottling.Bright aromas of star fruit, pineapple and apricot, along with jasmine, white pepper, apricot and lemon curd. Juicy upfront flavors of pineapple, lychee, lemon and passion fruit lead to a well balanced spicy core of mango, lemongrass and mineral, finishing round and elegant, with fresh acidity.
2016 Sauvignon Blanc Santa Ynez Valley
Bright aromas of passion fruit, lychee and melon along with perfumed aromas of sandalwood and lemon. Upfront flavors of pineapple, starfruit and lemon lead the way to a textured core of mineral, spice, lychee and lemon-curd finishing fresh and juicy.
2014 La Presa Vineyard Riesling
A dry Riesling of new world character from the cool La Presa vineyard. Floral aromatics and some petrol. Excellent acidity and good length.
2016 Grenache Rosé
Bright aromas of cherry, orange, watermelon and guava along with citrus blossom and lilikoi. The mouth offers up juicy pineapple, cherry and guava followed by a mineral laden core of lilikoi, orange and spice, finishing fresh and long with bright acidity.
2013 Halé – 90% Grenache, 10% Syrah
Bright high-toned aromas of cherry, plum and currant, along with elegant scents of lavender, licorice, allspice and cinnamon. Bright flavors of cherry, pomegranate, plum and currant lead the way followed by a rich core packed with Provencal herbs, cinnamon, leather and cocoa, finishing with tight tannins and well balanced acidity.
2015 Grenache Santa Ynez Valley
Rich and lush flavors of raspberry, plum, and grenadine lead to a rich core filled with chocolate, bakers spice, mineral, scorched earth and caramel. The finish is rich and layered with flavors of dark chocolate and long gripping tannins well balanced by acidity.
2013 La Presa Vineyard Grenache
Deep aromas of cherry, blueberry and grenadine combine with complex aromas of lavender, spice box, white pepper, herbs de Provence and red hots. Big flavors of dark cherry, cranberry, and plum give way to rich core of cinnamon, pomegranate, brown sugar, black pepper and herbs de Provence. The finish is long and juicy with smooth tannins.
2013 Grenache Tierra Alta Vineyard
Deep aromas of cranberry, pomegranate and raspberry along with lavender, hibiscus, licorice, violets, herbs de Provence, allspice and sandalwood. Lush flavors of cherry, pomegranate and rhubarb lead to a juicy core layered with cocoa, suede, herbs de Provence, strawberry cream, coco.
2013 Grenache Larner Vineyard
Big aromas of red licorice, black cherry, pomegranate, and raspberry along with sandalwood, herbs de Provence, leather and violet. Rich and plush flavors of raspberry, ripe cherry and grenadine lead to a rich core filled with chocolate, baker’s spice, licorice nutmeg and clove. The finish is velvety smooth with big rich long lasting chewy tannins.
2011 Hapa Reserve
Dark inkiness and rich syrah flavors. Nose has red fruit, cherry, lead, cobalt and capsicum. Palate has red fruit, dirt, minerals and plush tannins.
2013 Ronin
Deep aromas of black and blue berry, black currant and plum along with scorched earth, violet, vanilla and oak. Flavors of plum, currant and mulberry lease to a core or earth, pencil lead, leather, violet and spice. Finishing with long structured tannins.
